Joanne Louise Mooring art
Biography
Joanne was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1968. She grew up in Little Gaddesden, a picturesque village in West Hertfordshire.

As a girl she would go walking in Ashridge National Park and in the nearby fields. Sketching on her pad and collecting wild flowers. The flowers would be taken home and pressed under the front door mat to be made into pictures and birthday cards for family and friends.

At 12 she painted a watercolour of the local church. This painting was entered in a competition and sent to Germany for judging. She won 3rd prize.

After studying Art, Technical Drawing, Craft and Design at school she was awarded an Art foundation course at Watford College. She was offered purely on her portfolio.

In 1984 she started an apprenticeship as a draftsman for a consulting engineering company. The following year she attended St. Albans Building College on day release studying a BTEC in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1990 she moved about five miles to Berkhamsted also in Hertfordshire. She taught herself pottery and bought a second-hand kiln to make terracotta garden pots and house number plaques.

A year later she became interested in Encaustic Wax Art after attending a seminar. She bought a kit and has been creating wax art ever since.

In 1995 she completed two City and Guilds courses in Watercolour and Mixed Media at Berkhamsted Adult Study Centre. She entered a piece of coursework, a Watercolour painting into the annual Berkhamsted Art Competition which is voted for by the public. She won, beating her old Art teacher from senior school. “It was a very satisfying experience, I learned some new techniques and had a lot of fun.”

In 2003 she entered a national competition held by Channel 4’s the Richard and Judy program. She entered three pieces of work and was one of the 15 finalists. Her entry, which was an encaustic wax painting was shown on television and was subsequently exhibited in the Royal College of Art near Knightsbridge in London.

In 2004 Joanne’s work was placed on permanent display at the Kings Arms Hotel in Berkhamsted’s High Street. She has created a lot of interest since opening the gallery and has completed several commissions for guests visiting the hotel. The commissions include family and pet portraits, seascapes, pop art and reproductions of famous artists such as Munch, Rothko and Jack Vettrianno.
